AFL Clubs in Rajasthan: The Rise of Footy in India

When you think of sports in India, cricket often dominates the conversation. But a lesser-known game, Australian Football League (AFL)—fondly called “footy”—is beginning to carve out its own space, especially in the desert state of Rajasthan. Thanks to the relentless efforts of the Footy Association of Rajasthan (FAR) and a group of passionate pioneers, AFL is no longer a foreign sport. It’s now a growing movement capturing the imagination of Indian youth.

The Origin of AFL in Rajasthan

The journey of AFL in Rajasthan started in 2016, with the formation of the Pink City Footy Club in Jaipur. Founded by a handful of enthusiastic youngsters inspired by Australian rules football, what began as a casual initiative has evolved into a structured ecosystem. Their passion and persistence gave rise to a full-fledged league, laying the groundwork for more clubs and athletes to join the footy revolution.

The Footy Association of Rajasthan (FAR)

The Footy Association of Rajasthan (FAR) is not just an organization—it is the driving force behind the growth of AFL in the state. As a registered body committed to the development of the sport at the grassroots level, FAR provides resources, training, coaching, and tournament support to budding clubs and players.

Special recognition goes to Mr. Late David Son, whose visionary leadership and contributions—both financial and ideological—laid the very foundation for AFL in Rajasthan. His legacy continues to inspire the footy community across the State.

AFL Clubs in Rajasthan: Growing Stronger Each Year

As of now, Rajasthan proudly hosts four active AFL clubs, each contributing to the sport’s expansion and visibility:

These clubs have played an essential role in training athletes, conducting local matches, and spreading awareness of the game in their regions.

But the journey doesn’t stop here. FAR is working tirelessly to expand this number to six clubs by the end of this year, aiming to build a more inclusive and competitive environment for players across the state. With increasing participation from schools, colleges, and local communities, the dream of turning Rajasthan into a footy hub is becoming a reality.
